Winter Tips To Keep Your Hair At Its Best

Winter's here!

Whats so bad about Winter?

Apart from the fact that its cold, windy, wet and grey outside?

At this time of year, it is so important to take extra special care of our hair. Don't tell me you don't notice that your skin dries out. Well, so does our hair. If you think of your skin as you do your hair, you are on the right road.

This is what happens with our hair while it is fighting the elements we just can not avoid during winter.

1. Cold temperatures

The elements can play havoc with our hair. Cold weather saps our hair of moisture. When the hair is dry, its prone to breakage which means its time to get the conditioning products out to protect your hair.

When your hair is exposed to the cold temperature outside and then you walk into a room with the heating on, the evaporation causes moisture loss. Now is a good time get in the habit of using a conditioning mask at least once a fortnight to keep your hair moisturised. Leave in conditioners are also brilliant for the cold weather as they create a barrier against the elements at the same as conditioning your hair. The key to hair survival without all the frizz is to condition, condition, condition. If you can handle a cool rinse when you wash your hair, it will help with smoothness and shine.

2. Humid weather:

Moisture in the air is the master of frizzy hair which can be a nightmare for us. It might feel like it gives us the perfect excuse to get the straighteners out to keep our hair smooth but please try no to overuse your heated appliances.

Try to stay away from your hairdryer and straighteners and any other heated stylers as they will dry your hair out further. If you don't like the way your hair sits without the use of these tools, discuss product use with your hairdresser as it is surprising what they can do without the need for a blow dry etc. Anti frizz products are essential if you have dry hair. Leave in conditioners will block the moist air out and keep the frizz at bay.

If you do feel more products are needed, Do use any silicon based products with care. A lot of us like the smoothing and shining effects of these products but the silicone can be very difficult to remove from the hair completely without a clarifying shampoo which can eventually cause your hair to snap. Over use of the clarifying shampoo will also cause the hair to dry. Catch 22. I recommend that you use silicone products no more than once a week and the same for clarifying shampoos as they can remove the protective natural oils from the hair shaft that are needed to protect hair during the cold months.

Further tips to ensure your hair stays beautiful and healthy despite the English weather.

1. Avoid over-brushing.

As your hair will be more delicate through these months (and it can get pretty windy out there), try to comb your hair gently with a wide-toothed comb a couple of times a day to prevent tangles. Be sure to follow the rules of brushing safely - Always comb from tip to root! Grab yourself a Tangle Teezer and if you still struggle with knots, add a little leave-in conditioner (when wet) to comb through your hair more easily.

2. Have regular hair cuts

If you are trying to maintain length with your hair, make sure you have a regular haircut. This will help prevent any breakage moving up the hair shaft and causing you trouble later. If you don't keep on top of those split ends, you will eventually have to have more hair snipped off.

3. Cover you hair

For the trend setter who can pull it off, a pretty silk scarf to protect your hair will work wonders. It will keep away the wind and help the hair remain at at a steady temperature. Hats will of course also do the trick.

I hope you find all this information useful and your hair gets through these months without too much damage.
